168 Hours

My contribution to the exhibition currently at Aardklop, called 168 Hours, curated by Martli Janse van Rensburg and Magdel van Rooyen. We had to document our week and translate it into seven two dimensional expressions and one 3-dimensional artwork.

Directions for use

Directions for use is a series of paintings, showing, in a tongue in cheek way, how to possibly engage with Allen Laing’s functionally ambiguous sculptures. As a sculpture typically serves no other purpose than standing on a plinth to be looked at, these paintings present the artists, lovingly engaging with and inspecting the sculptures , while subtly questioning the purpose or motivation behind art and the ambiguity behind how to engage with it.

The series is currently on exhibition alongside Allen Laing's sculptural piece Like a baby but less cute, at Diptych, curated by Assemblage.

Where: Liberty building (cnr of Wolmarans and Biccard, Braamfontein).

Training/Tripping

I take the Gautrain about twice a week so the landscape has become very familiar to me. Training/Tripping is a series of views from Centurion to Park station. On the sides, I painted thoughts, afterimages and memories which often goes through my head while riding the train. When the artwork is viewed from the front, only the cold landscapes are seen, but from an angle, the thoughts become visible.

The Genealogist

This painting made it to the top 40 of Sanlam Portrait Awards 2013
I actually wanted to enter "The erratic likeness of the sculptor"*, but sadly I couldn't enter a "lense-based" artwork so I entered this instead.

My father:
 - The treasurer of the Genealogical society of South Africa.
 - Deeply interested in ancestral knowledge.
 - often visits cemeteries with a camera and notepad
 - Values family.
 - Wishes everyone (including me) cared more for about the names of our forefathers

* I will share "The erratic likeness of the sculptor" after 26 Sept 2013, when it will be exhibited at Fried Contemporary Art Gallery, Pretoria. I believe this work holds great potential.
